QUESTION NO. 13
QUESTION: Councillor M. McDonagh
To ask the Manager to provide an update on my Membersnet request of 23/06/2011 for the removal of the hedgerow between 9 and 11 Lealand Gardens in order to assist in reducing the level of anti-social behaviour in the area?
REPLY:
An inspection of the hedgerow located between 9 and 11 Lealand Walk was undertaken in 2011 in association with a hedgerow conservation expert. The trees and hedgerow plants at this location are part of an original field hedgerow which existed prior to the development of residential housing in the area. The open space associated with the development was arranged to incorporate as much of the hedgerow as possible to ensure that it survived the development process and contributed to the residential amenities of the area.
It is Council Policy, as set out in the County Development Plan 2010-2016, to protect the natural resources of the County and to conserve the existing wide range of flora and fauna through the protection of wildlife habitats and wildlife corridors wherever possible. It is intended to retain and manage the hedgerow in accordance with best practice. The removal of the hedgerow would have a significant, negative impact on the flora and fauna of the area while it is most unlikley to have any real impact in reducing incidents of anti-social behaviour in the area.
