QUESTION NO. 12

QUESTION: Councillor M. McDonagh

To ask the Manager to provide a report on the full cost of dealing with illegal dumping in the Clondalkin area in 2011 and to indicate whether the Council believes that there will be an increase in illegal dumping following the withdrawal of the waiver by Greyhound Recycling expected in 2012?

REPLY:

The total direct cost of providing the street cleaning service in the County 2012 is estimated to be approximately €6.5m.  This includes payroll, vehicle/equipment, waste disposal and other costs related to both the Cleansing Section and the Operations Unit and the costs associated with the road-sweeping contract.  In addition, a further €805,000 is provided in 2012 for the Litter Warden Service which includes costs associated with investigation and prosecution of illegal dumping cases.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to quantify the specific amount of the costs outlined above which relate directly to illegal dumping in the County as a whole or specifically in the Clondalkin area as the Cleansing/Operations crews operate across the various electoral areas rather than being assigned solely to specific areas.

In keeping with current practice, the Council's Litter Warden Service will continue to actively  monitor and enforce all  illegal dumping activity throughout the county with enhanced focus following on the withdrawal of the waiver by Greyhound Recycling and Recovery Ltd in the coming year.
