MEETING OF SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL

Monday, January 16, 2012

MOTION NO. 6

MOTION: Councillor M. Duff

That this Council calls on the Manager to ensure that all major and secondary road signage, including directional signage to major venues within the County, is readable and clear to the travelling public and to ensure that such signage is kept grafitti free.

REPORT:

The Area Engineers are aware of the need to keep all statutory signage clean and readable. Particular attention is paid to ensuring that vegetation does not encroach on the visability of the signage and at suitable times of the year programmes to cut back such vegetation are implemented. The Parks Section also assist in this task when implementing their works programmes.

However despite considerable thought being given to the placeemnt arrangements for large signs, in a number of locations attempts have been made to "tag" and / or add grafitti to some signs. While this does not impede the reflective ability of the signage it is unsightly.  In many cases the signs have been treated during manufacture with a covering which prevents much of the ink / paint etc from adhering strongly to the signs and this ink / paint is removed in a relatively short time by climatic conditions.

The Area Engineers have again been reminded to examine the signage in their areas and to repair or clean any vandalised signs.
