SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL
MEETING OF LUCAN AREA COMMITTEE

MOTION NO. 11
MOTION: Councillor E. Tuffy
That the Lucan Area Committee requests that the Manager brings forward proposals for the provision of one small playground in Palmerston and one in Lucan in 2012, and in developing proposals specifically investigates opportunities to collaborate with institutions such as schools, churches and existing providers of Playzone type facilities?
REPORT:
A Play Policy Review document was presented to Sports-Recreation-Community and Parks SPC on 9th November 2011. The document details 6 objectives to be undertaken as part of the review. Objective No 1 is to ‘Facilitate and support the provision of appropriate, accessible and safe playgrounds and play areas for young people in South Dublin County’ There are a number of actions to achieve this Objective, one of which is to prepare a 5 year Parks Works Programme for developing and implementing playgrounds and play spaces within regional and neighbourhood parks. This will entail a review of the existing Playground Programme. Representations for additional facilities raised by the Elected Members will be examined in the context of this review.
Objective 2 is to ‘Encourage the active involvement of communities and consultations with young people in the planning, design and development of playgrounds and play areas’ It is proposed to actively consult with young people in the locality of any planned play facility in existing residential areas. Should other institutions exist in the area the Council will explore the opportunity to collaborate with them where appropriate.
A sub-group comprised of council officials and Elected Members has been established to review the Play Policy. The review is aimed for completion by the end of the first quarter of 2012.
