MEETING OF RATHFARNHAM AREA COMMITTEE

Tuesday, November 08, 2011

MOTION NO. 14

MOTION: Councillor E. Coburn

"That this Committee discuss with the aid of a report the condition of the storm water drains in the Rathfarnham Area, their capacity to cope with adverse weather conditions and the state of repair of the drains".

REPORT:

The storm water sewers seem to have coped very well with the recent adverse weather conditions in the Rathfarnham area with only three incidents reported. The Whitechurch Road was blocked by water near the St Patrick's Cottages and had to be pumped into the Whitechurch River and 6 or 7 houses in Aranleigh Court were flooded. South Dublin County Council is still investigating this incident in Aranleigh Court but the solid wall across the end of the cul de sac where there is a green area may have contributed to this flooding incident as the water had no place to go. The third incident relates to the Glenvara/Castlefield Estates which is dealt with in a separate Motion. If the Drainage Section becomes aware that a surface water sewer has collapsed or has been badly damaged, it is repaired as soon as possible after the received report. All gulleys in the South Dublin County Council area are cleaned out at least once a year and in areas prone to flooding three or four times a year.
