QUESTION: Councillor D. Looney
"To ask the Manager to give details of all community organisations in the area under the remit of this Committee who work specifically with older people and with whom the Council have contact; to ask the Manager to give details of financial contributions under various schemes made to these organisations; and to ask the Manager to make a statement on the work carried out in general with older people by the Council and other organisations in this area."
REPLY:
South Dublin County Council’s Community Department engages with a wide variety of groups who work with and for older people throughout South Dublin County.
The many Community Centres and community buildings supported by the Council provide accommodation for organisations which provide a wide range of services including ‘meals on wheels’, social and sporting activities. These groups include Killinarden Friendship Group, Jobstown Senior Citizenss, Brookfield Young at Heart, Tymon Bawn Twilight Group and Newcastle RAMS. Many of the groups have availed of the Community Grants Scheme and the Community Staff provide advice and support where appropriate.
South Dublin County Council Is involved in a wide range of activities during the annual older persons festival ‘Bealtaine’- including cycling, walking, dancing and a large event in Tallaght Stadium to close the festival. The annual Tea Dance has proven to be particularly popular and has become a central element of S.I. Week.
As part of Social Inclusion Week, there will also be events open to and catering for older persons.
There are a number of organisations in the County which specially cater for Older Persons. Some of these are
* Trustus: This organisation provides a wide range of supportive local Community (Services and projects for Senior Citizens and people with disability. (Funded by HSE)
* South Dublin Senior Citizens: They provide Social events and fitness programmes in a number of locations throughout the County.(Funded by the HSE)
*Kilnamanagh Family Recreational Centre: This centre provides day care & meals on wheels. (Funded by the HSE)
The Council will continue to support and promote activities for older people and recognises the importance of engaging with senior citizens, and the importance of the contribution they have made and continuie to make to the overall community.
