MEETING OF SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL

Monday, October 10, 2011

QUESTION NO. 11

QUESTION: Councillor J. Lahart

To ask the Manager to detail the re-deployment of those previously dedicated to the bin collection service in the county and to report on the disposal of the refuse vehicles/freighters which previously formed part of the fleet?

REPLY:

The Council's refuse collection service ceased on Friday April 1st of this year and all staff redeployed to the new operations section on the following Monday April 4th.  At that time there were 51 general staff, an area engineer, 2 supervisers and a clerical officer in the section.  Since April 4th a total of 4 of the general staff who redeployed have now retired.

The refuse freighters had been provided to the Council under a 5 year hire and maintenance contract. This contract had commenced on 1st July 2006 and was due to expire on 30th June 2011.  The Council negotiated an early termination of the contract as the freighters were no longer needed beyond April 1st.
