MEETING OF LUCAN AREA COMMITTEE

Tuesday, September 27, 2011

MOTION NO. 16

MOTION: Councillor C. Jones

That the Manager would work with local schools to deliver allotments in the vicinity of the new depot planned for the park next to Grange Castle.

REPORT:

The Council has provided a small allotment scheme in Tymon Park, adjacent to the park depot and visitor reception buildings, which has proven to be very popular. One of the allotments is let on an annual basis to a local school, St. Joseph's School, Balrothery and has proven to be very popular with both children and teachers.

Following the approval by the Council of the Part 8 proposal for the new park depot at Hayden's Lane, it is considered that there may well be an opportunity to replicate the success of the Tymon Park allotment scheme, including the local school element, in the immediate vicinity of the new depot. An initial exploratory discussion has already been held with Adamstown School.

Arrangements are being made to assess the parklands, in the immediate vicinity of the proposed new depot, to determine the feasibility of providing a small scheme of allotments. As part of this process, arrangements will be made to assess the level of interest in such a scheme with local schools having regard to the practical issues involved in operating an allotment.

A further report on this matter will be presented to the December Meeting of the Committee.
