MOTION NO. 9
MOTION: Councillor E. Tuffy
That the Lucan Area Committee requests the Manager to provide an updated report on the Community Centre Project in Palmerston, focusing on progress and works carried out since July, and if he will advise on the position in regard to the arrangements under which Palmerstown Community Council will manage and operate the Centre, and when it is anticipated that the Centre will be available for use by the public.
REPORT:
Construction works to complete the Community Centre at Palmerston began several months ago and a considerable amount of progress has been made. Before and since the works began, the Community Services Department has met and advised the Palmerstown Community Council on a variety of issues such as Planning requirements, fit out costs, staffing and management issues, and most importantly, the various activities and uses that would take place at the centre when it is completed.
The last meeting took place on 27th July, when P.C.C. advised the Community Department officials present that a legal issue had been raised involving the management of the Shopping Centre and the owner of the building where the Community facility is located. P.C.C. are taking legal advice on how best to proceed and said that they would revert to S.D.C.C. in due course, when these issues had been resolved.
The Community Services Department has invested a considerable amount of time and effort to progress this matter over the past couple of years, and will continue to help and advise P.C.C. as appropriate.
