MEETING OF LUCAN AREA COMMITTEE

Tuesday, September 27, 2011

QUESTION NO. 15

QUESTION: Councillor W. Lavelle

To ask the Manager, further to the adoption of new parks bye-laws, to update on plans to provide a dog-run in Griffeen Valley Park?

REPLY:

The 2011 Bye-laws for Parks and Open Spaces contain specific provisions to allow the Council designate areas in public parks as "off leash" areas, known as dog runs, where dog owners may exercise their pets by letting them off the lead.

As previously reported to the Lucan Area Committee Meeting in June 2011, the small field, located adjacent to the GAA pitch at Hayden's Lane and previously used as a junior pitch, has been identified as an ideal location for the provision of a dog run in Griffeen Valley Park. The site is centrally located in the park, is convenient to the main pedestrian routes through the park, and is already partially enclosed by field hedgerows on two sides.

As there are a number of issues to be resolved in relation to the provision of a dog run including procurement, construction, signage, litter etc, the earliest it is considered that it will be possible to deliver this facility is the new year, subject to the availability of the necessary resources to complete it.
