QUESTION NO.12
QUESTION: Councillor D. Looney
"To ask the Manager for a report on the maintenance, upkeep and protection of the River Poddle, including its ponds, in Tymon Park, and to make a statement on the matter?"
REPLY:
The River Poddle, which flows through Tymon Park, is regarded as a major amenity asset in the park. The ponds in Tymon Park support a wide range of flora and fauna and are popular points of interest for visitors to the park, especially families and children. The River Poddle is also part of the surface water system for the area and water quality can be impacted by pollution incidents arising from one or more of the many surface water connections to the river from surrounding built up areas.
Following recent discussions between staff of the Parks & Landscape Services Department and staff of the Water & Drainage Section, arrangements have been made to engage an ecologist to undertake a baseline survey of a section of the river. The information from the baseline survey will be used to prepare measures to improve water quality, improve the ecological and aesthetic qualities of the river and minimise the possibility of future pollution incidents.
