MOTION NO. 12
MOTION: Councillor C. Jones
That the Manager would liaise with the four schools located on Station Road in Adamstown and with Castlethorn Construction with regard to considering measures that would in effect direct all of the school-time traffic in one-way to access the schools and in one direction to depart the area. This effect could be achieved by advantageously sequencing traffic lights at junctions and/or barring motorists from making turns at given junctions at school times provided it doesn’t disadvantage surrounding residents.
REPORT:
The Adamstown Project Team and Traffic Section of the Road's Department liaise with the Adamstown developers on an ongoing basis in relation to the detailed design of junctions and the sequencing of lights in Adamstown, in order to facilitate good traffic management and to ensure priority for pedestrians and cyclists as well as vehicular traffic. Existing arrangements are considered appropriate based on the current traffic situation in Adamstown, subject to agreed amendments at the junction of Adamstown Avenue/Castlegate Way.
The Project Team has worked directly with the Adamstown primary schools in 2008, in relation to traffic management and drop off arrangements for school children. The resulting plan required parents to drop children at designated drop off areas and to walk children along the 'Home Zone' to pedestrian access points. This arrangement facilitated safe and efficient drop off and collection.
The SDZ Project Team will review the arrangements that are in place for all schools ahead of the 2011/2012 school year with school principals. Drop off and collection arrangements will also be considered as part of the assessment of the current Planning Application (Reg. Ref. SDZ11A/0001) for a temporary school building.
