MEETING OF CLONDALKIN AREA COMMITTEE

Wednesday, June 15, 2011

MOTION NO. 16

MOTION: Councillor B. Bonner

That the Manager would submit a report on what is planned in order to celebrate the Centenary of Clondalkin Library.

REPORT:

The Libraries Department as a prelude to the celebrations in November has drawn up plans to refurbish the library this summer. This will entail the installation of self service stations similar to Lucan and the County Library, a new public toilet and a general upgrading of the facilities in the library in both the public and staff areas.

The celebrations themselves will follow on from the refurbishment and are set to take place in the autumn. There will be an exhibition to mark the centenary and there are plans to have a play set around 1911 to give a flavour of life when the library opened.

With the library being an example of the “Arts and Craft” style it is hoped to involve a school in a project on this style of building. There are also plans to produce a 3D picture of the library by involving the children that attend the regular craft sessions in the library.

The Libraries Department will keep Councillors informed as the plans and timetable for the celebrations evolve.
