MOTION NO. 1

Mayor's Business - MOTION: Councillor M. Corr

That South Dublin County Council fully supports the Justice for Magdalenes campaign calling for an apology from the State and the religious orders who ran the Magadalene laundries, a lump sum compensation scheme for women survivors, a statutory pension reflecting their years of work in the laundry institutions, and complete access to their records.  Furthermore, this council agrees that an extension of the current redress scheme would not be an appropriate approach as it would involve a stressful adversarial process incompatible with the age and vulnerable position in life of Magdalene survivors. 

REPORT:

If the motion is passed, the terms of the motion will be conveyed to the Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence, and, upon receipt, a copy of his reply will be circulated to the Members.
