MOTION NO.8 Councillor E. Higgins
That the Manager report on services the Council will be providing to young people and children across South Dublin during the summer months.
REPORT:
The Council facilitates a range of activities and events for children and young people over the Summer months.
Summer Projects are aimed at providing a supervised programme of recreational and educational activities for young people over a consecutive number of weeks in the summer period. Emphasis is placed on community involvement and the development of resources and groups within localities. A wide range of activities are encouraged such as arts & crafts, sports, educational trips, drama, films, games etc. The use of available community facilities (schools, community centres, halls, open spaces) is also encouraged.

County Dublin V.E.C has agreed to continue their financial support to Summer Projects for the year 2011. These grants will be complementary to the above resulting in co-ordination between the two authorities, ensuring there is added value from this approach.

Summer Reading Buzz 2011: Going Places with Books
South Dublin County Libraries invites all children to join us in our Summer Reading challenge for 2011. The theme for this year is Going Places with Books, and the challenge will take place during July and August throughout our branch and mobile library network. Aimed at children aged 4-12 years, Going Places with Books inspires children to read in the long summer break when their reading skills can decline without the regular reading activity at school.
The Summer Reading Buzz is simple. Children are encouraged to read ten or more books of their choice from the library during the summer holidays. They can sign up at their local branch or mobile library where they will receive a loyalty card which is stamped each time they read a book. Once the card is completed, it is entered into a draw which takes place at the end of the summer. Each child can complete as many loyalty cards as they choose.
This year we are also encouraging children to write to us and tell us where they are and what they are reading. We have designed a postcard which children can send from any interesting location, from sun soaked beaches to the Phoenix Park, and tell us what they are reading there.
Primary Schools in the County have been invited to particpate in the Summer Reading Buzz by distributing the postcards and encouraging the pupils to return them to either the school or their nearest library service point.
