QUESTION NO.4

QUESTION: Councillor C. Bond

"To ask the Manager to provide an update on the proposals for a pedestrian route from Bohernabreena road through the new Killtipper Park to Ellensborough/Marlfield?"

REPLY:

The route referred to is a section of the Dublin Mountains Way and was officially opened in October 2010 on the same day as the entire Dublin Mountains Way route was opened.  This route starts at Seán Walsh Park in Tallaght, continues on a route adjacent to Marlfield and Ellensborough estates and then runs through Kiltipper Park and Bohernabreena reservoir.  It is intended to enhance the landscape of this route when resources to do so are available.

The Dublin Mountains Way is a project of the Dublin Mountains Partnership and the Council is an active member of the Partnership.  The Dublin Mountains Partnership or DMP was set up in May 2008 with the ultimate aim of improving the recreational experience for users of the Dublin Mountains, whilst recognising the objectives and constraints of the various landowners.

The partner organisations involved are Coillte, South Dublin County Council, Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, Dublin City Council, National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Dublin Mountains Initiative, an umbrella group representing the recreation users of the Dublin Mountains.  The DMP was formally launched by Minister Eamon Ryan on Friday 24th October 2008 at a ceremony in Tibradden Forest.

The establishment of the DMP addresses the key need to manage the area as an integrated entity and also provides for commitments on funding and resources to underpin the DMP’s work. While the long term strategy is to manage recreation in the Dublin Mountains on a more sustainable basis, the DMP’s Action Plan is already underway. A DMP Recreation Manager was appointed to oversee the work of the Partnership
