QUESTION NO. 9
QUESTION: Councillor C. Jones
To ask the Manager to report on the roll-out of the Fire Blanket Scheme in our housing stock and leased properties?
REPLY:
Under the Housing (Standards for rented houses) regulations 2008 there is a requirement for Housing Authorities to provide fire blankets in its housing stock in the interest of Health and Safety of their tenants. South Dublin County Council engaged two contractors from the existing Electrical Maintenance Contract to carry out this work on a countywide basis. 9,000 dwellings were included on the programme which included all the Council’s rented stock and leased properties.
This work commenced in late 2010 and continued into 2011 and fire blankets have now been installed in 7,600 housing units. The contractors have called to every property at least once in order to gain access and left contact details where they were unable to gain access. The Council has a list of the properties where there was no access and will continue to make every effort to ensure that as many as reasonably possible will have blankets installed. In addition the fire blankets will be checked in each re-let prior to allocation and installed here required. Each fire blanket will be inspected in conjunction with the yearly boiler service. This work was funded by a grant from the Department of the Environment and Local Government.
