QUESTION NO.4
QUESTION: Councillor T. Gilligan
To ask the Manager to agree to the clean up of Corkagh Park. Cherrywood Avenue at the Old Mill on behalf of the South West Community Safety Forum?
REPLY:
The area around the Mill Complex in Corkagh Park near Cheerywood is a major litter blackspot in the Park. This somewhat secluded area is popular with groups of local teenagers who frequently engage in anti-social behaviour, loitering, drinking, dumping etc. and much of this activity takes place after park opening hours. The area is cleaned on a regular basis by the Parks Dept. but the level and frequency of the littering etc. is such that it is impossible to keep the area clean and to the same standard as the rest of the park for any significant length of time. It is unfortunate that the resources expended on these clean ups cannot, in the current circumstances, be re-allocated towards more positive improvements to Corkagh Park.
The Gardai have recently been requested to prioritise patrols in this area over the summer month in an effort to combat this problem. The Parks Dept. will continue to support local residents groups to maintain the area to an acceptable standard and has met with the South West Community Safety Forum on site regarding ongoing clean ups and efforts to curtail anti-social activities and littering in the area. Local residents can also assist in this matter by reporting anti-social behaviour to the Park Rangers/Gardaí.
