MEETING OF RATHFARNHAM AREA COMMITTEE

Tuesday, May 10, 2011

MOTION NO. 9

MOTION: Councillor P. Cosgrave

"That the Manager give a report on the high cost of disposal of asbestos for residents in the Rathfarnham area.  A resident has recently been asked for €306 for disposal of an asbestos downpipe.  This is a major problem for the residents of Rathfarnham as there was significant use of asbestos for drainpipes, gutters and water tanks."

REPORT:

Household hazardous waste such as paints, oils etc. where the substance is clearly identifiable, is accepted at the Council's Civic Amenity. Materials that require specialist handling, treatment and disposal, such as asbestos, cannot be dealt with at a facility such as the Civic Amenity. In disposing of these specialist materials, authorised contractors must be used. Prices charged are determined by the companies that provide service and relate to the complexity and costs associated with the disposal process.

Information on dealing with domestic hazardous waste, including a list of asbestos disposal contractors, is available to the public on the Council's website.
