MEETING OF LUCAN AREA COMMITTEE

Tuesday, April 26, 2011

MOTION NO. 3

MOTION: Councillor W. Lavelle

That this Area Committee expresses its appreciation to the Esker Cemetery Committee for its superb voluntary efforts in tidying-up the cemetery; and further requests the Manager to present, for discussion, details of the council's proposed work programme to maintain and improve the cemetery over coming months; including the need for regular grass-cutting and the need to replace the open rubbish dumps as I have requested on previous occasions.

REPORT:

Any voluntary work carried out by the committee referred to is most welcome and appreciated.

The ongoing difficulties faced in delivering the appropriate schedule of maintenance work in Esker Cemetery were caused in the main by the continual requirement to deploy burial grounds staff to the refuse collection service.  As this is no longer necessary the maintenance programme for Esker and all cemeteries throughout the County should be greatly improved in 2011, providing increased frequency of grass cutting to cemeteries throughout the summer months in particular.  The request for gates on the bunkers in Esker was investigated and a number of quotations were sought to ascertain the cost of carrying out this work.  However, given the current budgetary constraints and the relatively high costs associated with the quotations received, none could be accepted.  However, if additional funding becomes available, this work will be prioritised.
