MOTION NO. 5

MOTION: Councillor E. Higgins

That the Manager report on progress for the Palmerstown Community Centre and confirm when this project is expected to reach completion.

REPORT:

The Council met with Palmerstown Community Council shortly before Christmas to discuss the completion of the Palmerstown Community Centre.

Following discussions, the Council asked P.C.C. to indicate clearly what programmes, classes, community initiatives and other uses were proposed for the facility. The nature of these activities would inform the appropriate fitting out of the facility, and in doing so, would help to ensure the viability and sustainability of the Community Centre.

The Council took the opportunity to confirm its financial commitments to the Centerer in the form of a two-year management grant as well as assistance in the fit out of the Centerer with relative equipment. The P.C.C. undertook to address these issues and to come back to S.D.C.C. at a future date to progress matters and to bring the provision of the Centerer to a successful conclusion.

Palmerston Community Council have recently phoned to say that construction work has begun on site to bring the building up to the necessary standards of completion. The developer concerned is engaging the contractor on site. This work is expected to continue over the next few weeks and should be finished sometime in June according to P.C.C.

P.C.C. have assured us that they are carrying out the necessary research to identify what activities and services will be provided in the centerer upon its completion and fit out.
