QUESTION NO. 25

QUESTION: Councillor E. Tuffy

To ask the Manager if he will present a report on the works completed to date on the Lucan Weir Project, the expenditure to date on the works, the sources of funding for the project and the intentions of the Council for further works to be carried out in 2011 to bring this project closer to completion?

REPLY:

Phase 1 of the upgrade works to Lucan Weir Park is now complete.  The features of the work undertaken include the following:

• A new river bank edge incorporating stepped seating.
• A new promenade along the river linking Lucan Bridge with the Main Street entrance beside St Andrews Hall apartments.
• An upgraded path leading from Main Street to enable universal access for all visitors.
• A new viewing platform opposite the weir.
• Improved facilities for canoeists.
• An upgraded slipway to enable the fisheries board to access the river to improve salmon spawning grounds in the area.

The Park is open and fully available for use by the public.  Phase 2 of the project relates to the upgrading of the existing access steps at Lucan Bridge as well as the provision of lighting and CCTV system. These works are on hold pending the identification of the necessary finance to fund the works.
