QUESTION NO. 7
QUESTION: Councillor J. Hannon
"To ask the Manager to confirm when the commitment given on 22/07/2010 to plant thorny shrubs on the roundabout at *address supplied will be honoured, given that the works were to be done in Autumn 2010 and that the current situation is potentially harardous?"
REPLY:
This matter was examined by the Parks Department in the first instance with a view to producing an outcome which discouraged the use of the roundabout as a short cut.
However following contact from the teachers and pupils of Firhouse Community College, arrangements were made for some of the pupils to study the problems and to suggest solutions as part of their transition year studies. Their project on the road safety of the roundabout at Killininny Road / Parklands Road was the subject of a presentation by these pupils to Members and Officials in the Council Chamber earlier this year. Arising directly from this presentation a scheme to improve safety at the roundabout was designed along the lines recommended by the pupils studies and this proposal has been presented for funding to the National Transportation Authority. The scheme generally involves the relocation of the park gateway closer to the pedestrian crossing to the east of the roundabout in order to make the use of the crossing easier than taking a direct route across the roundabout.
The Council has been recently informed that funding for the proposal has been agreed in principal by the National Transportation Authority. It is intended to complete the scheme in the coming months and consideration is being given to marking the commencement of work on the project in an appropriate way.
