MEETING OF LUCAN AREA COMMITTEE

Tuesday, March 22, 2011

QUESTION NO. 1

QUESTION: Councillor W. Lavelle

To ask the Manager to provide an update on consultations carried-out and plans/strategies being progressed for both the redevelopment of traveller accommodation at Ballyowen Lane, Lucan and works to the adjoining vacant lands adjacent to Droim Na Coille Estate which remain the subject of dumping and anti-social behaviour; noting the objective contained in the Public Realm Transformation Initiative to address ‘illegal dumping and general dereliction of uneven ground’ at this location?

REPLY:

In a previous reply to a similar question it was stated that the Traveller Accommodation Unit were in the process of dialogue with the residents of Ballyowen Residential Caravan Park in relation to the redevelopment of the site. The first proposal was to change from a card metered system for electricity to a direct billing arrangement for all residents. A proposal to do this was presented to the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government for an allocation of finance to be included in the Councils work programme for 2011. In reply, the Department has indicated that there are no funds available this year to allow the Council to undertake this work. In this regard the Traveller Unit will maintain contact with the residents and the Clondalkin Travellers Development Group to monitor the situation with regard to proposals, and continue routine maintenance of the bays.

A Headed Item Report on the Public Realm Transformation Initiative is to be presented to the Lucan Area Committee at its meeting on 22nd March 2011 and will address the other issues referred to in the Councillors question.
