QUESTION NO. 12

QUESTION: Councillor W. Lavelle

To ask the Manager to report on the potential of opening-up access (during daylight hours) from Main Street, Lucan to the church and graveyard at Lucan Demesne? It is believed that this site is under the current care of the OPW?

REPLY:

The site referred to is the original site of Lucan estate 17th Century tower house and the grounds of the church (ruins) and cemetery of the Blessed Virgin Mary located behind the Vesey Arms Public House, Main Street.  RPS Ref. 072-Schedule 2 County Development Plan 2010-2016 refers to a ‘stone castle, church & Graveyard (Ruin)’ which is a Protected Structure with Record Monument status.

The Office of Public Works are listed under the ownership details for this Protected Structure site, therefore the Council’s Conservation Officer will contact the historic property section of the OPW to clarify ownership and to ascertain the potential of providing public access during the day to this Protected Structure/Recorded Monument Site.
