MOTION NO. 13

MOTION: Councillor G. Kenny

That the Manager looks into the possibility of building a footpath from the Melrose/Lindisfarne/Deansrath estates to connect with the new Grand Canal Cycle/ Walk way.

REPORT:

The Bawnogue section of the Grand Canal Walk is currently accessible from either end of the walk, from links off the Outer Ring Road and Fonthill Road, and from Kilcronan Estate. In addition to these hard surfaced access points there are a further 7 informal access points between the Canal Bank Park and the Canal Walk through gaps which were deliberately made in the berm to enable permeability.  There is no footpath on the northern side of the Bawnogue Road and any proposal to provide formal links would need to take this into account and be undertaken with the cooperation of the Roads Department.  Nevertheless it would benefit the residents living in adjacent estates to provide additional hard surfaced paths at strategic locations across the open space.

The provision of additional paths, kissing gates and associated works would be subject to the identification of the necessary resources.
