MOTION NO. 8

MOTION: Councillor T. Delaney

That the Manager will address the lack of signage for Newcastle along the N4 approaching the Newcastle Road Junction from both directions.

REPORT:

In the context of the National Road signage, destination signage for side roads utilise the ‘Terminal or Next significant destination along the regional route’ as prescribed in the Traffic Signs Manual table 2.2.4. It is not possible to sign all destinations from each junction.

In this case, from the N4 Lucan, Adamstown, Rathcoole or Newcastle could be signed.  Lucan and Adamstown have been signed as the closest and Newcastle is signed along the R120.  From the N7 Newcastle, Rathcoole and Lucan can be signed. Rathcoole and Newcastle have been signed and Lucan is signposted on the R120.

This signage is consistent with likely traffic routing between Dublin City (or the M50) and Newcastle village, where Newcastle is significantly closer to the N7 and is therefore signed on this route.   Direction signage for Newcastle village is provided in the context of several direction schemes along non national roads. The roads approaching Newcastle (R120, R134) have Newcastle as a destination as these roads approach or pass through the village.

It is not therefore necessary to signpost Newcastle from the N4.
