MEETING OF LUCAN AREA COMMITTEE

MOTION NO. 11

MOTION: Councillor G. O'Connell

To compliment the Manager on the “Voluntary Corps” initiative and that the Palmerstown Community be selected as a pilot area and that consideration be given to incorporating a strategy for helping maintain safe footpaths and roadways during inclement weather such as the period just experienced, for the eradication of litter and dumping and for the promotion of health and safety across Glenaulin  and Waterstown Park.

REPORT:

Led by South Dublin County Council and South Dublin County Volunteer Bureau the South Dublin County Volunteer Corps  is a new volunteer movement of citizens of the County who make themselves available to volunteer for various events and/or emergencies in the County.  The volunteer corps members will be contacted and mobilised to respond to extreme weather events as well as being available to large community activities such as once off sporting events, celebrations etc.

The idea of  a volunteer corps was mooted originally in the 'ideas campaign' which was run in 2009.  However the idea became more focused during the recent extreme weather events when many residents expressed an interest in 'doing something' to help out.  Also with 2011 being the European Year of Volunteering, we are hoping to create a project in South Dublin County which will have a lasting effect.

Anyone can apply to be a member of the corps at  volunteercorps@volunteersouthdublin.ie.  There will be no ongoing/monthly commitment to the corps.  Members will be contacted to see if they are interested in participating in a particular event with the exception of bad weather events when emergency call ups will be made.  Members of the Corps will be expected to participate in at least one event locally each year.

Local "not for profit" organisations in South Dublin County will apply to the 'Volunteer Corps' requesting the services of the Volunteer Corps.
