MEETING OF LUCAN AREA COMMITTEE

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

MOTION NO. 8

MOTION: Councillor E. Tuffy

Cathaoirleach's Business

That this Committee supports the waiver scheme available to lower income householders as part of the Council's household waste management scheme, requests the Manager to advise how many householders in the Lucan Electoral Area are eligible for the waiver, and finally asks if he will make a statement on the extent to which householders in receipt of the waiver in the Electoral Area are able to use it satisfactorily, and if he would consider the circulation of a further information leaflet to all households in the EA on the effective use of the black and brown bins.

REPORT:

There are currently 2,831 environmental waste charge waivers approved for customers in the Lucan Electoral Area, representing over 15% of all waivers issued in the County.  Approved waiver customers are currently provided with three black and three brown bin lifts per quarter, this provides considerable assistance to those customers in disposing their waste annually, amounting to lifts equivalent to €189 per customer.  There has been consistent presentation of bins by waiver customers since the introduction of the brown bin.

Considerable information was circulated to customers at the time the brown bins were distributed and further advice is provided on the Council's website.  It is not intended to do an additional leaflet drop at present but provision of information and advice to Residents Associations, community groups and individual residents will be provided on an ongoing basis as required.
