QUESTION NO. 26

QUESTION: Councillor E. Tuffy

To ask the Manager if he can advise the Committee on the responsibility of the developer of the Paddocks, Adamstown SDZ, to provide adequate public street lighting during the current phase of development, when housing construction is continuing but many housing units are already occupied?

REPLY:

The Paddocks is still under the control of the Developers, Maplewood Developments. To date the majority of the public lighting system within areas where residents have moved into has been taken in charge by the Council’s Public Lighting Department. A condition of the planning permission for the development was that ‘public lighting shall be provided as each street is occupied in accordance with a detailed scheme which includes the location and design of light fittings to be submitted to and agreed in writing by the Planning Authority prior to the commencement of development’. However we are aware of a small section of the development that has been occupied, where the Public Lighting has not yet been offered for taking in charge. This area is currently being lit using temporary lighting supplied by the Developer. Within this section of the development the current situation regarding Public Lighting provision is unsatisfactory and we are currently in discussions with the developer and the SDCC’s Public Lighting Department in order to progress the matter so that the permanent public lighting is installed to the satisfaction of the SDCC’s Public Lighting Department as soon as possible, as per the requirements of the condition attached to a grant of permission.
