MOTION: Councillor J. Lahart

That the Manager outline the legal costs of the Council in 2008 and 2009 in total and by department as requested by me at a pre-budget meeting.

REPORT:

The Council incurs fees in respect of legal work associated with its many operations and functions.  The fees are two-fold and relate to

• fees paid to external suppliers in respect of services delivered, whose costs are budgeted for and paid directly by the Council's user dapartments 
• the Council's Law Department, whose cost centre is budgeted at zero but whose costs (Payroll and Non Payroll) are charged out to the Council's user departments.

The attached report outlines the spend by department on legal services for 2008 and 2009, excl of VAT, as well as details of legal costs recouped.
