QUESTION NO. 2

QUESTION: Councillor M. Corr

"To ask the Manager what additional measures have been taken in terms of the cleansing and unblocking of road gullies that have become blocked due to falling leaves - the Greenhills area, most especially, which houses a substantially aged population is particularly bad and given the age profile of residents can prove extremely hazardous both on roads and footpaths?"

REPLY:

The cleansing and unblocking of road gullies that have become blocked due to fallen leaves is carried out by the Council's road sweeping contractor under the terms of the contract in place.  This contract requires that additional resources be provided during the period October to December each year to deal with the issue of fallen leaves on roads and footpaths.  These additional resources are in place and the work to remove leaves is underway.  The Council's cleansing section has provided the contractor with lists of areas in the County where leaf removal is required.   However, due to storms over the last number of weeks, there were lengthy lists of areas to be addressed.

Lists are compiled on the basis of requests made by the general public, elected representatives, litter wardens and by cleansing staff using their local knowledge.  All areas brought to the attention of Environmental Services are added to the list for cleaning, and any area that is identified as being potentially dangerous is prioritised.
