QUESTION NO. 24

QUESTION: Councillor D. Keating

To ask the Manager what is the schedule for the cleaning of fallen leaves in estates in Lucan and Palmerstown villages? Many of our footpaths are completely covered with fallen leaves that are wet, and this is of great concern for many residents owing to the health and safety issues that arise.

REPLY:

This work is carried out by the Council's road sweeping contractor under the terms of that contract.  The contract requires that additional resources be provided during the period October to December each year to deal with the issue of fallen leaves on roads and footpaths.  These additional resources are in place and the work to remove leaves is underway.  The Council's cleansing section has provided the contractor with lists of areas in the County where leaf removal is required.  Due to the storms of the past few weeks these lists have become quite lengthy.  The lists are compiled on the basis of requests made by members of the public, public representatives, litter wardens and on the local knowledge of the cleansing staff themselves.  All areas brought to the attention of Environmental Services will be added to the list for cleaning, and any area that is identified as being dangerous can be prioritised on those grounds.
