QUESTION NO. 2

QUESTION: Councillor D. Looney

"To ask the Manager to ensure that the grass verge at the junction of St Joseph's Rd. with St James' Rd., Greenhills, continues to be cut by the Council, as has been done for many years, given the elderly nature of residents in the immediate area?"

REPLY:

The grass verge at this junction is not maintained by the Council on a regular basis.  Grass verges such as this one are generally maintained by the householders in the immediate vicinity who directly front or gable onto them.  It is understood that occasionally in the past, the grass verge has been cut by the Council but it is not included on the grass cutting rota for the area.  Whilst the Council is sympathetic to the situation of the residents, it is not possible to include individual areas such as this on the regular grass cutting rota for the area without putting significant additional pressure on the rota. In general, family members, neighbours and/or friends would usually assist elderly people with garden maintenance which would include the grass verge outside the home. In addition, where a larger area such as this one is involved in a housing estate, the local residents association or tidy districts committee often look after the area as part of general estate maintenance and improvement.
