MOTION NO. 8
MOTION: Councillor C. Brophy
That the Manager provide an update on why work has not been carried out to finish off the landscaping work at the base of the trees on Orwell Green which were thinned out at the request of the Residents Association.
REPORT:
Thinning work was undertaken on the dense tree planted areas on Orwell Green as part of a programme of work agreed with the Residents Association and as part of the ongoing tree maintenance works in this area. It was also intended to maintain the areas free of undergrowth. However, having considered this proposal in the context of the Council’s commitment to the protection and enhancement of biodiversity it is not considered appropriate to keep this area free of undergrowth and which would have required the use of a disproportionate quantity of herbicide. It is also now considered more appropriate to cut the undergrowth on a periodic basis and thus protect the natural vegetation as well as presenting a more diverse flora to the local population. This policy is consistent with both the objectives of South Dublin County Council and the National Biodiversity Plan.
