COMHAIRLE CONTAE ÁTHA CLIATH THEAS
SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL
MEETING OF SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL
Sunday, September 12, 2010
QUESTION NO.31
QUESTION: Councillor E. Walsh 2009
Madir leis an Tairiscint a ghlac an Chomhairle seo i mí na Feabhra seo caite chun tús a chur leis an Scéim Rothaíochta Bhaile Átha Cliath i limistéar an Chontae, an bhfuil aon dul chun cinn déanta go fóill chun téarmaí na Tairisceana seo a chur i bhfeidhm?
(Having regard to the Motion passed by the Council last February to commence the Dublin Bike Scheme in the area of the County , has there been any progress to date to implement the terms of this Motion? )
REPLY:
Ghlac an Chomhairle an tairiscint i mi na Feabhra seo caite.
Tá sé réitigh go mbeidh an Ábhar seo curtha i leith Coiste um Beartais Straitéiseacha Iompar an Chomhairle agus go cuireadh said É seo leis an chlár oibre atá acu. Bhí an Chomhairle i teagmháil leis an chomhlacht a mhaoinaigh an scéim sa Chomhairle Chathrach and tá siad sásta staidéar a dheanamh ar scéim mar seo sa Chontae. An mhalairt ná bealach eile a fháil chun Íoc as an scéim. Mar atá luaite sa tuairisc i mí Feabhra, beidh fhios ag na Comhairleoiraí go raibh “sceim rothaí” mar pháirt den iarratas den chiste don Smart Travel initiative – níor eirigh leis an iarratas seo.
Idir an dá linn, tá an Chomhairle ag pléigh le comhroinnt rothaí i Halla an Chontae, Áit a mbeadh rothaí ar fail don fhoireann agus na Comhairleoiraí. Beidh tuilleadh faoi seo ag seoladh Seachtain Réthaistil ar an 16ú Mean Fómhair
The following Motion was passed at the February 2010 meeting of the Council:
"That this Council notes the extraordinary success to date of the Dublin bike scheme in the Dublin City Council area to date and undertakes to conduct a feasability study as to a similar application in the County."
It was agreed that the matter would be listed for consideration by the Council's Transportation Strategic Policy Committee who have added the item to their extensive work programme. Preliminary contact has been with the firm who funded the scheme in the City Council and they have indicated that they would be willing to explore the provision of a similar scheme in this County. The alternative is to identify another means of financing the scheme. As pointed out in the February report, Members will be aware that a "bike scheme" formed part of an application for funding under the Smart Travel initiative which was unsuccessfull.
In the interim consideration is being given to the introduction of a bicycle pool scheme in County Hall which would be accessible to staff and members. Further details will be provided in conjunction with the launch of the upcoming European Mobility Week on 16th September next.
