QUESTION: Councillor W. Lavelle

To ask the Manager to report on efforts to support the establishment of new youth cafes around the county including any proposals received or approved by the County Development Board under the POBAL youth café funding scheme?

REPLY:

On behalf of the Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs POBAL requested nominations from County Development Boards throughout the Country for funding to improve existing youth café facilities and funding to support new youth cafes.  The role of the CDB was to:

•          Co-ordinate and manage local selection process

•         Use local knowledge and networks

•         Ensure applications in advance of deadline

•         Endorse application

The County Dublin VEC agreed to work with local organisations and organise the applications on behalf of South Dublin County Development Board.  An assessment committee was set up by the CDB and this group met and recommended the following nominations be submitted to POBAL.

Support for  existing Youth Café facilities:

Megabites Youth Café, Griffeen:                       €5,000

Stars Youth Café, Ronanstown:                        €5,000

Support for new Youth Cafés

South Dublin County Mobile Youth Health Café:           €100,000

These projects were submitted to POBAL on 11 June, 2010

South Dublin County Council Community Development team continue to work with local organisations and the management of community facilities throughout the County to increase the quality of the facilities on offer to the local community.  This includes the provision of cafe style faciltiies in community buildings where appropriate.  The newly developed  facilities including Ballyroan and St. Dominics include informal cafe style areas.
