QUESTION NO. 20
QUESTION: Councillor D. Looney
To ask the Manager to report on any existing or planned scheme to enable redundant apprentices to complete their qualifications working for the County Council, as in Dublin City Council, and to make a statement on the matter?
REPLY:
There is currently no new scheme in place in any of the Dublin Local Authorities to enable redundant apprentices to complete their qualifications.
Dublin City Council are in discussions with Fás in relation to a proposed special scheme for taking on a small number of apprentices who are on phase 5 of their training to enable them to complete their qualification which ceased because of redundancies or lay-offs. South Dublin County Council is awaiting the outcome of these discussions and will look favourably on participating in any agreed regional/national scheme dealing with redundant apprentices.
South Dublin County Council currently have 5 Junior Apprentices and 2 Adult Apprentices persuing the following courses, Apprentice Painter, Brick-layer, Carpenter, Mechanic and Plumber.
