QUESTION: Councillor D. Looney
"To ask the Manager for an update on the provision of the brown bin service in the area under the remit of this Committee, including estates to be included in the initial rollout of the scheme, the costs and the timescale involved?"
REPLY:
The implementation of the brown bin system has been the subject of intense discussions with the waste collection staff representatives in the context of the necessary restructuring of the service that is required to facilitate its introduction.
A contractor has been appointed to supply and deliver brown bins throughout the County and it is anticipated that this will commence one ratification of the outcome of the discussions referred to above is confirmed, to comply with national targets for the diversion of bio-degradable waste from landfill by the deadline date of July 2010. Compliance with the deadline date of July 2010 is critical to the future of the Council's waste function as only pre-treated waste can be accepted at landfills from that date forward. Councillors and customers will be advised of the roll out arrangements and service details as soon as possible. It is expected that the first deliveries will begin in mid to late May 2010. The timeframe for complete roll-out is in the region of 70 working days and the cost for the supply, delivery and registration of brown bins to each waste customer in the County is approximately €1.77m.
