QUESTION: Councillor W. Lavelle

To ask the Manager, further to the motion adopted at the March meeting, to provide an update on efforts to introduce an appropriate work-placement/ training programme for unemployed persons?

REPORT:

Following the adoption of the motion referred to, letters were issued on the 9th of March 2010 to the Minister for Finance, the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, and the Minister for Trade and Employment informing them of the Motion. Copies of the Council's letter and interim replies received to date are attached.

The Minister for Finance advised that this business is within the remit of the Departments of Social Protection and the Department of Education & Skills.    The Minister for Finance has advised in acknowledgment attached that a copy of the Council's letter has been forwarded tho these departments.

Members have been regularly updated on the IEZ project which is now being developed on a regional basis. The project provides opportunities for participants to develop new approaches to business and work opportunities through networking, access to relevant training and mutual support. It has been developed on an interagency basis involving the Dept of Social Protection, FAS, CEB and other stakeholders.
