QUESTION NO. 11

QUESTION: Councillor E. Tuffy

To ask the Manager to provide a report on current Community Garden Projects in the County, and if he will advise if any Community Garden Projects under the direction of the Council involve the use of land used by other organisations, businesses or individuals?

REPLY:

There are no Community Garden Projects in the County at present.

As Community Gardens are of relatively recent provenance in an Irish context, the Council is exploring the possible structures, legal issues and practicalities under which the concept can be advanced in general in the South Dublin County's administrative area.

The Council in conjuction with Stewarts Hospital in Rossecourt, Balgaddy is considering a community garden on a piece of land in the ownership of Stewarts Hospital, which is situated adjacent to the new residential developments in the area.  The project is at an early stage of development as the Council is currently concentrating on the formation of Resident/Environmental Committees in the area.

However, this project will be re-examined later this year in partnership with the interested parties including the Council, Stewarts Hospital, Archbishop Ryan School, Ronanstown Training Centre, An Garda Siochana and the Community. At this point in time any development of Community Garden Schemes must be community led and cost nutural to the Council.
