MEETING OF TALLAGHT AREA COMMITTEE (2)

QUESTION NO. 10

QUESTION: Councillor M. Duff

"To ask the Manager to make a report to this Committee regarding the new "Thru-ways" from Brookmount to Spawell and Firhouse, at the M50 roundabout, to confirm that there is disabled access to these "thru-ways", secure and satisfactory lighting installed, access for emergency services and if there is any intention to install CCTV for public safety purposes?"

REPLY:

The throughways which were constructed as part of the M50 upgrade are provided for the benefit of pedestrians, cyclists and mobility impaired as a safe route across this very busy intersection. It should be noted that the throughways were designed as an extension of the existing footbridge at this location and provide a safe and direct access for all users through the free flow links provided as part of the upgrade of the capacities of the interchange. It is regretable that the public lighting system employed originally by the contractors was subjected to vandalism and theft. The system is in the process of being restored in a more robust design to counteract the diffciulties experienced to date. The question of CCTV provision will be examined in the light of the curent monitoring arrangements for the throughway over the coming months.
