MEETING OF RATHFARNHAM AREA COMMITTEE

MOTION NO. 14

MOTION: Councillor C. Keane

"That this Committee recommends that the pedestrian access/exit at Knocklyon Park on St. Colmcilles way be examined with a view to enabling buggies to exit with ease -  they are having great difficulty at present. A queue builds up there in the morning with the numbers of  parents/schoolchildren from Woodstown trying to exit in the morning, also to have the area adjacent to said gate cleaned up and landscaped."

REPORT:

The anti-cycle gate located at the pedestrian access to Knocklyon Park from St. Colmcilles Way is to a standard design that is used throughout the parks and open spaces in the South Dublin administrative area.  Its function is to particularly impede access to public open space areas by motorcycles but the gate is designed to facilitate access for standard wheelchairs and children's buggies.  The design of the existing anti-cycle gate is also effective in alerting caution in pedestrians and slowing down their passage from the open space area to the busy thoroughfare of St. Columcille's Way.  An alternative access gate, known as a k-barrier has been installed in some of our parks in recent times and residents of Woodstown may wish to consider the suitability of this type of access gate for the location in question.

With regard to the landscaping of the open space area adjacent to the gate, this area formed part of the contract works site for the Boherboy Water project which is under the supervision of the Council's Environmental Services Department and its reinstatement is within the remit of this project.
