QUESTION NO. 18
QUESTION: Councillor E. Walsh 2009
To ask the Manager does the Council use, or has it any plan to use, LED based street lighting given its success in other European countries having regard to its low maintenance requirement and its significant reduced power use in comparison to sodium lamps?
REPLY:
The Council is continuously researching new technoloy in the context of providing a more efficient and sustainable public lighting service and has generally been to the forefront of new initiatives including dimming and telemonitoring and white light versus SOX/SON. The Council is aware of advancements made in the area of LED lighting however the technology is still regarded as being in it's infancy and problems have been highlighted in the driver technology associated with its use. An ongoing assessment is underway in relation to the introduction of this new technology as one of many of the new innovations that are available in the marketplace. Once the sustainability of the systems have been established consideration will be given to the introduction of a pilot project.
