QUESTION NO. 5
QUESTION: Councillor M. Corr
"To ask the Manager to carry out a review of the safety of the Luas crossing on Cookstown Way turning towards Tallaght Hospital with a view to improving this junction to ensure motorists do not break amber lights as there have been several near collisions at this location and signal importance should be re-emphasised?"
REPLY:
The junction of Belgard Square North and Cookstown Way is adjacent to the Luas hospital stop, the Luas line crosses the Belgard Square North arm of the junction.
A yellow box is provided to indicate the path of the trams so that drivers can easily comprehend when they can safely move without becoming stranded across the line.
All traffic crossing the tram line is permitted sufficient time to clear the crossing before the tram is permitted to proceed across the roadway. Drivers failing to observe signals, at this or any other junction, will put themselves and others at risk of an accident.
The junction has been inspected and approved by the Railway Safety Commission permitting the junction’s interaction as part of the Luas system.
