COMHAIRLE CONTAE ÁTHA CLIATH THEAS
SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL
MEETING OF TALLAGHT AREA COMMITTEE (1)

QUESTION NO. 9
QUESTION: Councillor S. Crowe
"To ask the Manager, in view of the ongoing problems being experienced by residents living in more mature estates with collapsed broad straps in sewers and the onerous responsability this puts on residents, will the Manager give a report outlining the estates in this Committee area that have and are currrently experienceing difficulties and the measures and supports, if any, this Council can supply to residents?"
REPLY:
South Dublin County Council is responsible for maintaining the sewerage network. However, the Council is not responsible for maintaining private drains on which all broadstraps are located, even if they are located under footpaths. The Council's Drainage Maintenance Section provided a service whereby they would repair broken broad straps for a fee part paid by all the residents on the combined drain run usually up to 6 houses.
Due to the economic environment and the resultant re-prioritisation of works, it was necessary for the Council to discontinue this service in favour of focussing Council resources on the maintenance of the public networks. The Council will continue to prioritise maintenance of the public networks.
