MEETING OF SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL

Monday, March 08, 2010

MOTION NO.1

MOTION: Councillor M. Duff

Mayors Business

That this Council call upon the Manager to consider the provision of a Garden of Remembrance or a Columbarium Wall in Boherbreena Cemetery to facilitate families for the interment of cremated remains of loved ones, in close proximity to the burial ground, where other family members may interred and to institute a traffic management system within the confines of the Cemetery, in an effort to prevent incursion by vehicles within the Lawn Cemetery.

REPORT:

The lawn section of Bohernabreena graveyard was opened in August 2004 and it incorporates an area dedicated to the burial of cremated remains.  To date the Council has not received any requests for the purchase of such spaces.  There is adequate space available to develop a memorial wall at this location in the future, if required, however this is not proposed at the moment as no spaces have as yet been taken in this area.

The engineer in charge of graveyard maintenance has recently purchased bollards and other items necessary to control access to the lawn cemetery from the main car park in the graveyard.  These barriers are due to be erected in the very near future.  Once these are in place Council staff will be able to control vehicle access to this part of the graveyard.
