QUESTION NO. 8
QUESTION: Councillor E. Coburn
"To ask the Manager what feasibility study was undertaken with regard to implementation of the traffic lights as a replacement to the roundabout at Ballycullen road and Colmcille Way west for improved traffic flow of all routes to this junction. What consideration was taken of traffic volumes from surrounding housing estates?"
REPLY:
The roundabout at the junction of Ballycullen Road and St. Colmcille’s Way has been the subject of major congestion and subject of several studies. The critical issue for the flow of traffic at the roundabout is that all approaches are balanced equally and that traffic exits off the roundabout in order that gaps are available to waiting traffic. It is found that these gaps did not occur, particularly affecting traffic approaching from the southern side (e.g. Woodstown).
In order to better balance the flows in all directions at the junction traffic signals are being installed. The signals will use the most advanced traffic detection and control system to maximise the capacity and reduce delays to all users of the junction. The signals also include full pedestrian facilities. Together with the Scholarstown Interchange upgrade queues emanating from the M50 should be significantly reduced assisting traffic on St. Colmcille’s Way.
It is anticipated that all traffic, particularly local users who most often use the junction, will benefit greatly once the signals are operating.
