Report on Procurement of Social Housing 2010

REPORT:

Following a discussion at the January meeting of the Tallaght Area Committee, it was agreed to bring a report to this meeting on the changing nature of social housing provision and the likely impact of this in the Tallaght area in the year ahead..

The Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government have informed all local authorities that the focus of future social housing supply will lie with the expanded suite of non-construction supply options including the Social Housing Leasing Initiative and the Rental Accommodation Scheme. New construction proposals will only be considered in very exceptional circumstances such as infill schemes to address anti-social behaviour, special needs etc.

In this context, 212 social and voluntary housing units were delivered in 2009, 48 are due in 2010 and 190 in 2011 in the Tallaght area.  

Based on previous years we estimate that approximately 140 properties contracted into RAS will be located in the Tallaght area in 2010. 

Apart from the balance of unsold affordable homes, just under 50, which may be leased this year for temporary social use, it is impossible to give an estimate of the number of social homes that will be provided by way of the Social Housing Leasing Initiative due to its early stage of development.
