MEETING OF RATHFARNHAM AREA COMMITTEE

Tuesday, February 09, 2010

MOTION NO.  4

MOTION: Councillor C. Keane

"That this Committee recommends that a Rathfarnham Community Network be enabled/facilitated in the community i.e to have a Rathfarnham Community Group locally based to respond to emergencies e.g to organize visits to the elderly who are; living alone; lonely or snowbound; to state the steps necessary to achieve this. Also this Committee commends the meals on wheels group who provide meals to the local community."

REPORT:

South Dublin County Council provides a very comprehensive community development and support service through its Community Development Team.  Considerable assistance is available to any individual or organisation throughout the County who request assistance.  This support and advice is available to any local residents or organisations from Rathfarnham who may be interested in establishing such a network.

The necessary first steps would be that these interested residents should identify if a need exists for such a network, what committment is there from local residents to get involved and actively participate in such a network and also to identify what the objectives of such a network should be.  Contact can be made directly with the Community Development Team.

The Community Services Dept. is also aware of the excellent work being done by the Ballyroan Community Care Committee who organise the local Meals on Wheels service. The Meals on Wheels service has been one of the major services operating out of the old Ballyroan Community Centre for a large number of years and it is very much hoped that this essential service will go from strength to strength and operate for many years into the future, with state of the art large modern kitchen facility going into the newly refurbished Ballyroan Community and Youth Centre.

In recent months a Community Centre Network had been established across the County for all Community Centres in our County. Community Centre's in the Rathfarnham area have the opportunity and for the most part are currently actively involved within this network.
